Out and About With the DMV Italian-American Community

COMITES DC is currently conducting a research project “Tracing Italian Roots” on Italian immigrants / Italian descendants in the Washington D.C. and Maryland area, supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI) and Com.It.Es DC – the Committee of Italians Abroad. The goal is to collect and share personal stories of migration from individuals and families of Italian origin. These stories will be featured in a digital platform that celebrates the roots of Italians who came from villages, small towns and city across Italy.

We are conducting short interviews to gather information, perceptions and feelings, and would be truly honored to hear about your family’s journey.
If you or someone you know would like to share your migration experience, please don’t hesitate to reach out — your story is a valuable part of our shared heritage.

Thank you so much,
Maby Palmisano, COMITES DC

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE UNIQUE SHEEPDOG OF ABRUZZO?

If you are trying to decide on a breed for a Livestock Guarding Dog or it you already love the Maremma and want to know more about the breed’s ancient history and how it made the Maremma the consummate LGD, the Maremma Sheepdog Club of America is hosting a webinar on March 8, 2026, at 7 p.m. eastern time that will provide fascinating historical insights. (AMHS members can attend our March 8 event in the afternoon and still catch this presentation.)

In this webinar, Sarah Letts traces the ancient history of the Maremma Sheepdog to explain how they were specifically bred to “close guard,” to stay with the flock and bark only when needed. Sarah compares this to the different environments of other Livestock Guardian Dogs, specifically the Great Pyrenees and the Kangal, who were bred to range a larger area, work more independently from their shepherd and scout for predators.
