AMHS VICE PRESIDENT LYNN SORBARA TO DISCUSS CANCER RESEARCH ADVANCES
For our 5th program this year, on September 24, 2017, we are very pleased to have one of our own as speaker, Dr. Lynn Sorbara. Lynn will be familiar to our members as the current AMHS 2nd vice president following several years as a board member. But perhaps not all our members know that Lynn’s day job is as a cancer expert at the National Cancer Institute (part of the National Institutes of Health). She will talk to us about the topic she is very familiar with—advances in cancer research: What is known? What remains challenging? What are the future possibilities?
Using a very informative Powerpoint presentation, Lynn will break it all down for us in layman’s terms, beginning with how the ancients dealt with what we now know as cancer, continuing on up to the new treatments of today and the possibilities of tomorrow.
Since many of us have been touched by this in some way, either ourselves or our dear ones, Lynn will provide each of us with a printout of her Powerpoint presentation with room for us to write notes, and she will take questions from the audience afterwards. We hope our members and their guests will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
During her talk, Lynn will also speak a little about how her story begins with her immigrant parents coming to America. Lynn’s father was Calabrese and her mother was Sicilian and together they settled in Queens, N.Y., with no money and no English. While maintaining their Italian traditions, they raised a family which included their daughter who earned a Ph.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, N.Y. An amazing success story in one generation!!
Our program will be held at Carmine’s Restaurant, at 475 7th St., N.W., just a few blocks from Casa Italiana. A delicious lunch will be served beforehand. Since space is limited, please make your reservations early. The deadline for paid reservations is September 20. See you in September!!
