The small town of Castelmauro is located 30 kilometers north of Campobasso, in the province of Campobasso. It has approximately1,452 inhabitants, known as Castelmauresi.
Previously called Castelluccio Acquaborrana, the town had its origin in the Middle Ages on the slopes of Monte Mauro, amid thick woods of beech trees, along the left bank of the Biferno river.
In the Middle Ages this small center enjoyed a remarkable importance, thanks to the powerful feudal families of the Cantelmo, D'Evoli and Mormile, who surrounded the place with high walls with only three doors. In September 1884, the small village of Castelluccio Acquaborrana changed its ancient name to a new one--Castelmauro. After the unification of Italy, in the late 19th century, emigration was mostly to the Americas, while a true massive exodus took place in the aftermath of World War II, especially to the Belgian mining center of Herstal, which is now a twin town with Castelmauro.
Nearby Monte Mauro, whose summit is a favorite destination for excursions, offers a view as far as the Lesina Lake and Dalmatian Mountains, on the other side of the Adriatic.
Outside the town, the Church of Madonna della Salute is worth a visit, with its statue of the Virgin Mary covered in jewels that is carried in a procession on September 7 and 10.

Monte Mauro
Parish Church of San Leonardo, with a fine 18th century facade and ancient belltower. The beautiful interior is typical for its gilted altars in carved wood and the fine organ; in the crypt there are corpses of abbots and bishops in their memorial garments, seated on ancient wooden seats.

Il piccolo comune di Castelmauro si trova a 30 chilometri a nord di Campobasso, in provincia di Campobasso. Ha circa 1.452 abitanti, noti come Castelmauresi.
Precedentemente chiamato Castelluccio Acquaborrana, il paese ebbe origine nel Medioevo sulle pendici del Monte Mauro, tra fitti boschi di faggi, lungo la riva sinistra del fiume Biferno.
Nel Medioevo questo piccolo centro godette di una notevole importanza, grazie alle potenti famiglie feudali dei Cantelmo, D'Evoli e Mormile, che circondarono il luogo con alte mura con solo tre porte. Nel settembre 1884, il piccolo borgo di Castelluccio Acquaborrana cambiò il suo antico nome in uno nuovo: Castelmauro. Dopo l'unità d'Italia, alla fine del XIX secolo, l'emigrazione fu per lo più verso le Americhe, mentre un vero e proprio esodo di massa ebbe luogo nel secondo dopoguerra, soprattutto verso il centro minerario belga di Herstal, che ora è un paese gemellato con Castelmauro.
Il vicino Monte Mauro, la cui cima è una meta ambita per le escursioni, consente di godere di un'ampia vista fino al lago di Lesina e ai monti della Dalmazia, dall'altra parte dell'Adriatico.
Fuori dal paese, merita una visita la Chiesa della Madonna della Salute, con la sua statua della Vergine Maria ricoperta di gioielli che viene portata in processione il 7 e il 10 settembre.

• Chiesa parrocchiale di San Leonardo, con una bella facciata del XVIII secolo e un antico campanile. Il bellissimo interno è tipico per gli altari dorati in legno intagliato e il bell'organo; nella cripta sono custodite salme di abati e vescovi nelle loro vesti commemorative, seduti su antichi sedili di legno.
