2017 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PERIOD NOW OPEN

As many of our Society members know, the AMHS awards two $4,000 scholarships annually – one to each of two highly qualified students. The AMHS and the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) operate the program jointly. The application period for the 2017-2018 academic year opened on December 1st, 2016. Applications from eligible high school and college/university students, as well as all supporting documentation, must be received by NIAF no later than March 1st, 2017. The eligibility criteria for both organizations are found on their respective websites: https://www.niaf.org/, and http://www.abruzzomoliseheritagesociety.org/scholarships/

This program presents a wonderful opportunity for high school and college/university students, and we urge our members to tell their children, grandchildren, and relatives about it. Spreading the word makes it possible for young people in our own families to take advantage of this unique and rewarding program . Although membership in the AMHS is not a requirement for submitting an application, applicants must either be NIAF members themselves or have a parent or guardian who is a NIAF member. Bear in mind, however, that AMHS members are automatically members of NIAF by virtue of the Society’s official association with that organization.

As noted, AMHS and NIAF operate the scholarship program jointly. The job of screening the applicants and compiling a list of eligible candidates is carried out by NIAF, which has a fulltime staff member charged with this task. NIAF forwards the list of eligible candidates to the AMHS, whose Scholarship Committee selects the two winning applicants by majority vote. Scholarship Committee members are Peter Bell, Lucio D’Andrea, Dick DiBuono, Ray LaVerghetta (Chair), Romeo Sabatini, and Lourdes Tinajero.

For additional information or questions concerning the program, please check the Society’s website or contact any of the Scholarship Committee members.
