Capital of Abruzzo, the town of L’Aquila lies at the center of the Aquilian basin in view of the massif of the Gran Sasso. The town’s original nucleus dates back to the mid-13th century and consisted of 99 rioni or districts, each of them provided with a fountain, a church and a piazza. It seems that the number 99, so recurrent in the history of L’Aquila, was dictated by legend, but still today, out of respect for tradition, the bell of the Civic Tower peals 99 times. The economy of the town, at one time mainly agricultural, has now been diversified by flourishing industrial, commercial and handicraft sectors – the latter famous for its production of lace, wrought iron and woodwork. Tourism also makes a substantial contribution to L’Aquila’s economy; it has enjoyed continuous growth in recent years. L’Aquila can boast of an important heritage of art and architecture, including the Renaissance church of San Bernardino, a number of magnificent 16th century mansions, and the castle overlooking the town which is considered a masterpiece of military architecture.
La cittadina, capoluogo dell’Abruzzo, sorge adagiata al centro della conca aquilana in vista del massiccio del Gran Sasso d’Italia. Il nucleo originario nacque verso la meta’ del ‘200 ed era constituito da 99 rioni ognuno dei quali disponeva di una fontana, di una chiesa e di una piazza. Sembra che il numero 99, cosi’ ricorrente nella storia del L’Aquila, sia dettato dalla leggenda ma ancora oggi, per rispetto della tradizione, la campana della Torre Civica scandisce 99 colpi. L’economia della citta’, un tempo prevalentemente agricola, e’ oggi affiancata da fiorenti settori, quali commerciale, industriale e artigianale; quest’ultimo con la famosa lavorazione dei merletti, del ferro e del legno. A completare il quadro economico aquilano concorre in gran misura il turismo, da anni in continuo sviluppo. Anche l’arte trova qui importanti testimonianze con la chiesa rinascimentale di San Bernardino, con i superbi palazzi cinquecenteschi ed infine con il Castello, considerato un vero capolavoro di architettura militaresca.
